'76 Batchmates from all over,

Nasir Memon (mian, chotte mian, bullet, nassiri, nausea, tayyab ali, chutt, and gods knows what else I have been called) - memon@poly.edu; After finally getting out of the 6 1/2 years of insanity at Pilani, tried my hand at achieving Nirvana, but no luck there. Meanwhile, worked in family business in Bombay for 4 years, but no end of justifications like “karma” and “dharma” and the likes were providing sufficient motivation for my continuing doing so. Recall applying to IISc but they just laughed at me! At the urging of Phud and with lots of help from Viggy, left for Nebraska in 1986 to study computer science. Rest is history :-) Live in New Jersey now and teach at Polytechnic University in Brooklyn, New York. Married Yuhong Yu (she was a fellow PhD student at Nebraska) in 1992 and our only son Yuwen was born a few months later. We do keep some pictures on his web site http://www.yuwen.com . You can check it out when you have little else to do. And, no I am not a social or political activist of any sort. Neither am I into organizing anything whatsoever. And no, I am not one of those vela profs wiling my time away, as many of you would suspect. So what am I doing getting these “class notes” together? It was just a string of coincidences that led me to this task. But, I confess I am having some fun doing it. And so are many of you from the feedback I am getting.

Keep on writing in !

Nasir

C. K. Dwarkanath (CKD) - dwarkanathc@learnetindia.com; After Pilani, I did PG in electronics at Coimbatore ...cause could not fit/stay into any job, then joined IISc. After 2 years at IISc ( School of Automation ), I joined DRDO and did 'desh ki seva' for 13 long years... I did some work in Biomedical signal processing and lot of fooling around at DRDO, in the name of seva (Velagiri??). I quit DRDO in March 2000 and since then with Learnet India Ltd, Bangalore . We develop software and content for eLearning in educational Institutes and corporations. I got married early (1984) [not as early as guy who has got married in 1983-one year earlier to  me!!!!!] and I have a college going daughter(doing BDS) and another daughter who is school going types. My wife maintains law and order at home...sees to that whiskey bottles last for months...untouched...

B. C. Krishna (BC) - bckrishna@alum.mit.edu; I work for a small startup called Memento, Inc. as their CTO. After Pilani I worked at CMC in Bombay , OMC in Hyderabad , was a whore for a body-shop called Kilchand-Devchand and Company, spent a bunch of time at DEC, went back to school along the way, and have been doing the startup thing for the past 7 years. Married to Geeta (Bhatnagar, Madhu’s sister), two kids (Nikhil, 12; Tara 11). Became a vegetarian last week. That was after I turned vegetarian two months ago. Gave up drinking yesterday. Maybe I’ll start smoking to compensate. Or something. Some balance is necessary.

Murali Ganapathy (Gaffy) - muralig@sympatico.ca – After working in engineering consulting and the chemical industry in Mumbai for 11 years, I immigrated to Canada and am working with an environmental consulting firm in Toronto . I am married to Sita and she works for a mutual fund company in investment management. We have two kids, Kritika -11 years and Krishna – 4 years.

Pankaj Dhingra pankaj@dhingrafamily.com. I work for Delphi Corporation heading up their worldwide automotive battery business.  After BITS, I have cycled through a number of careers - and the search for variety continues.  I began with Unisys in software engineering, then moved on to sales and finally to marketing.  After 10 years with Unisys, I decided to enter the world of finance with treasury at General Motors, moved to strategic planning, then to finance with Delphi and now into general management.  Home life is thankfully much more stable ... we live in Michigan with two children, 15 and 11.  We are in an interesting phase in our life, trying to cope with two teenagers -- one is a bonafide teenager, while the other thinks and behaves like a teenager.

Gokul Mishra (GN)   gnmishra@yahoo.com After Pilani I worked for Tata Burroughs, a IT services company; ZS Associates, a Sales & Marketing consulting firm; Booz Allen Hamilton, a Management Consulting firm; Oracle Corp. with the Larry gang, then ran my own company Information Insight Inc.  Currently I work for Sierra Atlantic, a IT Services firm as a Senior Director of Business Development for Central US . I live in Naperville , a Chicago suburb, with my wife Ratna, 17 year old daughter Seetal, 13 year old daughter Jyoti and 10 year old son Samir. Ratna works for the Naperville Public Library. Seetal started college this year (2003) at Case Western Reserve University out of Cleveland , Ohio .  She will be majoring in Bio-Medical Engg. with Pre-Med.  Jyoti is in 8th. grade and Samir in 5th.  As you can see I have a long time to live the middle aged, middle class, mediocre existence putting the kids thru college.

Shashi Warrier - swarrier9@vsnl.net; I kind of retired in 1995 and took to writing full-time. I have since developed a talent for falling off things, mostly motorcyles, though I have also fallen off bicycles, bullock carts, rocks, and once a golf-cart. In between long spells of falling off things I managed to write a few books, which somebody suckered people like Penguin and HarperCollins to publish. I got married late (only Sundeep Sahay continues unwed, and may his tribe increase!) to an old classmate from school, Prita, who has known me even longer than you guys have. She is the busy one of the two of us, and runs Coimbatore 's only art gallery. In between books and falling, I teach rhetoric at T A Pai Management Institute, Manipal. I have also co-authored (what a bloody pretentious word) the screenplay of an English movie called Bokshu, which has an international cast and is essentially a ghost story set in Uttaranchal. Parts of it are quite spooky. I am now working on the story of a middle-aged man's pilgrimage to Kashi and parts beyond. I tried writing for children, but didn't do too well at it, and would like eventually to get back to children's fiction (all right, fairy tales). All kidding aside, if you guys read, try my "Hangman's Journal". Also a forthcoming novel (hunting for a publisher in England ) involving Sufis and Kashmir , for which I spent a month loafing in the hills around Baramulla and Sopore. That was when I fell off rocks.

Anup Bhargava  anup_bhargava@yahoo.com : Worked initially with Universal Cables Limited and Ranbaxy for about a year and then joined Bhilai Steel Plant, a division of SAIL and worked there for about 15 years in various divisions, last 5 years in EDP (Computer Centre) as Senior Manager. Ram Mohan and Deepa Mahidara (aka Deepa Bhargav) - mahidhara@aol.com; Did our Ph.Ds at Univ. of Texas , Austin --- Ramu in Economics, Deepa in Operations Research.  Had first daughter, Pallavi when Deepa was still finishing up - she is almost 16 now - a rising pianist and often, our claim to fame!!! Second daughter, Radhika, is 12 - she is a riot like all second borns.  After changing a few jobs, Ramu is now with International Finance Corporation in Washington , DC .  Deepa is still continuing with her first job - United Airlines in Chicago , she works from home and goes to Chicago every week for a day or two. Ramu and Deepa, 6609 Wilson Lane , Bethesda , MD 20817 , 301-320-2226

Shyam Bagaria (Cine Sam) - shyambagaria@satyam.net.in; I got married as soon as we passed out to Smita in 1981 and I remember, still, so many Bitsians, of our batch, present on my marriage day. Well, and like all Marwaris like me, I joined my family business of ship repairing at Calcutta and really worked hard for 12 long years, earning lot of wealth, and finally landed up in making (producing) a Hindi movie named Nirnayak (being the old cine Sam that I was) and in the bargain lost a lot of my earnings. Now I have realized how risky it is, to be into a movie business. And now I am still in Calcutta (a dying city now) and trying to still survive with some or the other business. Regarding family, I have 2 teenaged daughters aged 21 and 16 and my only wife till date with me.

Arvind Joshi (Joey) - arvind_neena@hotmail.com Married Neena in 1988.  Daughter, Mihi, aged 14 years and son, Aadi, aged 7. Employed by ICICI Infotech to set up their office in Sydney , Australia . Worked for Tata Engineering after BITS, followed by a 13 year stint with Chase Manhattan Bank a couple of years with ICICI Bank, MphasiS and then a BITsian dot-com Entomo in Seattle (Sanjoy Chatterji, Sunil Pande, Suresh Kumar).  Have slowly and determinedly worked in all English speaking countries with a few left to go - Canada , Sri Lanka and South Africa . Always technology and usually around financial services.  Gave up alchohol this morning.  Gave up facial hair in 1982.  My final weight in Pilani was 10 times my final CGPA, in kilos.  Today it is 17 times my final CGPA, still in kilos.  We must be thankful for small mercies - if I was a 10 pointer I would weigh a 170 kilos and would compete in flyweight Sumo wrestling in Hawaii .

Anil Khasgwala (Khasgi) appalto@sancharnet.in After BITS, I was refused student visa to US. Stayed and worked in Bombay for 1 year before starting my own venture in process control equipments. Started the venture in 1983 in the name of Appalto Electronics. Added one more unit in 1994 in the name of Arucom Electronics Pvt Ltd. We are presently developing and selling special  electronics and software (SCADA) to various manufacturers of process control equipments in India . Got married in 1984 to Snigdha Mehta. She was an international table tennis player ranked 2nd in India . She has represented India in various international tournaments. I have a son Vishal 17 yrs studying Mechanical Engineering at MNIT Jaipur and a daughter Namrata 13 years studying in 8th. Lost a lot of hair while running the unit. Now established OK but cannot get the lost hair. Any help coming from my batch mates on hair growth would be welcome.

Dilip D'Souza - dilipd@rediff.co.in; The best thing I ever did in my life happened in Bombay in August 1992, when I met Vibha Kamat. (OK, here's where I take a short break to collect a substantial sum of money from her for writing that ... I'm back now). We were married in December 1993, and our son Sahir was born in June 1999. The two of them are the lights of my life (OK, hold on while I collect some more ... I'm back again). Vibha teaches French. Sahir goes to KG and sings a lot. I lead an essentially retired life in which I try to convince myself, with Vibha's help, that I am writing for a living. Pilani seems very long ago, but some of the memories remain as fresh as the smell of rajma in the mess on Tuesday nights. I put it down to that excess of bucket booze I consumed the night I learned, to my  everlasting joy, that I had collected 17 votes in my Students' Union Presidential bid. (Hey, I did beat Rajiv Sodhi, who got 4). Who those 17 were remains one of the great conundrums of my life.

Arindam Mitra (Dom) mitraarindam@yahoo.com Here's the brief guided tour of the life and times of Arindam, the Dom. After BITS, started life in Driplex, a Chemical firm in Delhi doing turnkey projects in water treatment and ash handling for thermal power plants and industrial effluent treatment plants.  After a stint of 3 years here, moved on to Gujarat Heavy Chemicals (GHCL) which became home for the next 15 odd years.  Working first in projects, set up the plant and then moved on to marketing.  During the marketing years moved to Mumbai (nee Bombay ) in 93 to take over operations there and then to the main marketing setup in Ahmedabad as the GM marketing in 96. In between got married in 88 to Madhumita. About five years ago in 1998, I was the victim of a hit and run accident. Someone up there was smiling on us so against all odds and expectations, I managed to pull through but this caused a spinal injury, which resulted in paralysis and quadriplegia.  After an initial 6 months in hospital, it has been a long hard road. With the blessings of God and extensive physiotherapy, I am slowly regaining movements and have also started walking a few steps with support. Am hopeful of reaching a reasonable functional level in the future. So we are here in Ahmedabad - my mother, me, Madhumita and son Aniruddha who is 10, studies in Vth. Presently working from home with some NGO’s on projects, with an Art company Indiaart.com, doing my own copywriting and designing of brochures and other communication material. Sudhir Rao -  sudhir_gitanjali@yahoo.com; After Pilani hung around doing nothing for 6 months and then joined Ingersoll Rand (almost started working at the infamous Bhopal Union Carbide plant, but chose Madras over Bhopal ).  Hung around with Chetty and Kulla while there.  Stayed at Rahul's house and ended up marrying his sister !! Came to Ann Arbor in '02 to do my MBA and then joined GM (with a brief interlude in Chicago ).  GM has been kind to me in that I have lived in Zurich for over 5 years; India for 5 and Thailand for a year with them. Was in touch with YS quite a bit but never got to Cal to meet up with old buddies Hara and Das Babu.  We are now back in the Detroit area, where my daughter goes to 10th grade and son 6th.  Have been in touch with Shantanu here -- if anyone else is close to here, please let us know.

Ravi Kichloo Ravi.Kichloo@Avnet.com Ravi Kichloo( Kich the bitch)(Ravi.kichloo@avnet.com) After graduating from BITS, started work in Bombay in 1981.( I went to the IIT Powai festival--Mood Indigo-- the previous year along with Dilip, Mota and a few others  as part of the team and fell in love with Bombay). I started work with Nemish Mehta--Tin Tin--and from there went on to Work for Philips, TVS, HCL,And the MAX Electronics group. Along the way lived in Bombay (I refuse to call it Mumbai)--had the time of my life there. Then to Pune for a short stint and then to New Delhi for 12 years. Last 3 years I am in Singapore . Work for a company called Avnet------Electronics components distribution and Design and supply chain services. I look after the South Asia operations for Avnet. Avnet is Headquartered in Phoenix , Arizona . Went back to Pilani once --perhaps in 1997--as part of a holiday to Jaipur etc---didn't like it there much--Kapoor and the samosa walla was still there--I think he still had one stove--but I didn't want to wait long for a samosa. Saw a lot of Donkeys hanging around the gate--I think the campus was closed and the whole place had a different look --and of course the familiar faces were missing. I have had the pleasure of meeting a few of you or being in touch with you and it has always been wonderful. It always amazes me when I meet someone even after 20 years---how the conversation starts as if it was just yesterday that we used to be in BITS. My wife Veena--we married in 1987-- is a housewife currently, after having come to Singapore . I met her in my 9th Std--first girl in my life. After an initial dreamy phase we lost touch because I came to BITS. In my First Sem, She wrote a letter to me with just my name and BITS. One of you good souls--I cant remember which (Maybe Memani--Machar- not sure though) happened to see that letter in some other Hostel and passed it to me  almost half torn  --and that is how we renewed contact. May God bless you --whoever did that. So after a long courtship of almosy 13 years I finally married Veena--one of the brighter things I did in my life so far. Our life together has produced two bright children Supriya(daughter) is 15 currently in Std 10th----and planning to become a journalist, Biologist, full time writer etc etc-- not yet sure which line to follow... and Parth my son is 10. Currently in Std 5 and enjoying life. My contact numbers in Singapore are--- 65806003(office), 65883276( home), 97309900( Mobile) If any one of you happens to be here give me a call. It will be a pleasure.
